Both business and first class offer more space and service than economy, but they’re not the same. Here’s how they typically differ so you can choose the right cabin.
Seat and Space
Business class usually has lie-flat or angled seats in a 2-2-2 or 1-2-1 layout on long-haul flights, with more legroom and recline than economy. First class often has fewer, larger seats—sometimes 1-2-1 or 1-1—with more privacy (e.g. suites or doors) and more space around the seat.
Service and Amenities
Business class typically includes priority check-in and boarding, lounge access, better meals and drinks, amenity kits, and improved entertainment. First class builds on that with more personalized service, premium dining (sometimes on demand), higher-end amenities, and on some airlines, bedding and pajamas.
Price
First class is usually significantly more expensive than business class—often two or more times the price on the same route. Business class is the most common “top” cabin on many routes where airlines have removed first class.
When to Choose Which
Choose business class if you want a big upgrade from economy with lie-flat sleep and good service without the highest cost. Choose first class when you want maximum space, privacy, and service and are okay paying a premium for it. On routes without first class, business is the top option.
